SONAR KOLLEKTIV ORCHESTER / AGUARANTED NICENESS (2008)

JAZZANOVA's Sonar Kollektiv label celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007. They took the occasion to form the Sonarkollektiv ORCHESTER - a Sonar Kollektiv super-group made up of label artists and friends. This fifteen musician strong ensemble is almost a big band and so truly earns the name “Orchester” (Orchestra). The complete instrumentation is 3 vocals, 4 strings, 3 horns and a full rhythm section.

The orchestra is led by the extremely capable VOLKER MEITZ who has worked with JAZZANOVA, CLARA HILL, PAT APPLETON (singer of DEPHAZZ), PHONIQUE, PATRICK MAJER (producer of WIR SIND HELDEN and ROSENSTOLZ) amongst many others. With numerous releases with his own project MEITZ and countless gigs all over the world, VOLKER is impeccably qualified for the job as musical director of the SK ORCHESTER. He's also responsible for all the arrangements and plays keyboards in the live set-up. Volker is joined in the SKO by highly skilled musicians of mostly classical and jazz education, each at the pinnacle of their creative powers. Five of today’s finest singers make up the bands core vocal presence.

SEÑOR COCONUT AND HIS ORCHESTRA / AROUND THE WORLD (2008)

Atom™ (Señor Coconut) has again adopted the perspective of an alien who, from Chile, his distant orbit, perceives the world as a remote place and not as his place of origin.

For this purpose, Atom™ uses the technique of mash up or culture clash: an Austrian crooner sings on a Swiss Cha-Cha-Cha (Pinball ChaCha), a Japanese, Toshiyuki Yasuda, programs the computer part on a Brazilian Bossa Nova classic (Corcovado – Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars), and this voice does a duet with Argenis Brito, a Venezuelan singer who lives in Berlin. One theme which all Señor Coconut albums share is Mambo, which is in turn an artificial product developed by Dámaso Pérez Prado. And once again we are dealing with someone living in exile: the Cuban Pérez Prado lived, worked and died in Mexico and produced for the American market. It was he who brought together stereotypes from the widest imaginable range of sources to make “Latino” marketable for the first time, leading in turn to Mambo making the crossover to jazz and turning up in popular hits in Germany in the 50s and 60s.

The track “Around the World” by the French band Daft Punk provides the background for this exceptional production, it is the common thread that unifies the album: electronica which is put back on its acoustic feet, because Señor Coconut’s creative process is no one-way street.

When you meet Marc Ashken you realise he’s not just another techno producer. Far from it, Ashken is unique, a man with his own style and outlook and he’s ready to share it with you. Born in London in 1981, Marc Ashken’s affair with music began at a very early age. His father’s love of blues and soul indented onto Marc’s psyche, artists like Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Pink Floyd and Aretha Franklin filling the air of his surroundings, shaping his view of music and the way he would later approach his art.

To Marc, music is therapy, a way to express feeling and emotion relating to whatever is going on in his life at the time. Unable to follow trends and fashions in whichever genre he has been grouped into by other people and with a total disregard for musical ‘rules’, Marc continues to make music that represents him as a person.

Marc plays all the instruments, all the vocals are sung by Marc, and the engineering and production is all from him. Take the time to sit back in whatever situation you are in and play the album from start to finish.

After re-releasing classics by Whirlpool Productions and Rockers Hi-Fi it's up to british dj- and producer legends Dave and Justin aka Pressure Drop now to continue.
