LUOMO / CONVIVIAL (2008)

A great release of vocal house music.
Sasu Ripatti is the producer and head writer behind Luomo, his musical outfit that has redrawn the boundaries of what house music can achieve. Always a shy man, Ripatti returns into view to introduce to the world Convivial; his latest, and fourth, album as Luomo. But this time he doesn’t have to arrive alone. In addition to long-time collaborator Johanna Iivanainen (from Helsinki, Finland), he lands with a semi-underground star cast; Cassy (Panorama Bar), Sascha Ring (Apparat), Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters), Robert Owens, Sue-C and an anonymous singer masquerading as Chubbs.

The album is not so much of an assembly as a series of commentaries, interspersed with contemporaneous studio stylings and entries from travel diaries he kept while working on the album. For the first time there’s a real collaboration between him and the singers; where he didn’t write all the lyrics himself but left plenty of room for his collaborators to bring in the lyrics and musical ideas. The title refers to the rather convivial vibe and social atmosphere that surrounded the making-of the album; something new in Luomo’s production history. The main hub to record and create the album was again Berlin, as is in so many cases today, but since then he decided to relocate to his home country of Finland, where he finished the album and is currently living.

It always feels good to arrive at a certain destination after a long journey, whilst simultaneously knowing that a new chapter has just opened. For George Evelyn aka E.a.s.e., the force behind trailblazing leftfield act Nightmares On Wax, things have come full circle.

This new album was inspired by a special journey from Evelyn’s birthplace of Leeds to his new family home located right in the middle of Ibiza. Instead of shipping all his studio equipment by boat, E.a.s.e. rose to the challenge of writing some music on a unique roadtrip. By bringing the gear, a decent sound engineer and the N.O.W. live band members in camper vans on the long journey from the UK to the Balears and with a setting that readily provided inspiration, the rapport in exchanging ideas was instant, and thus the concept of "thought so..“ arrived, from the process itself.

Born in a small village in the heart of St Croix, Luciano aka Lucien-N-Luciano spends his first years in Switzerland, which he departs in the summer of 1988 to follow his mothers' roots to Santiago, Chile. Not only the distance in miles, but the distance in music cultures between these two continents intrigues and seduces the twelve year old and soon he starts to play what was going to be his very first instrument and a critical influence in his muiscal career - the spanish Guitar. Luciano used the guitar as a tool to learn the fundamentals of melody and rhythm, his self learnt skills were practiced in local bands. Surrounded by latin rhythms and rich melodies, he develops a strong curiosity for a diversity of music styles and soon after, in one of his trips back to Europe, experiences the machine sounds of techno as it made waves across Europe during the early years of rave culture and acid house movement.

Someone needs to come up with a name for what the Chileans are doing with techno. It’s a sound that’s becoming increasingly pervasive, with producers as far as Romania revelling in extended percussive squirm – a match as bizarre as Finland’s obsession with tango. Currently the genre sits in a conceptual grey area between minimalist understatement, Latin swing and nineties glitch, but these comparisons fail to adequately explain the scope and intent behind these productions. These pieces by three Chilean producers on Cadenza are archetypal examples of Chilean techno (or whatever you want to call it): all are original, exciting, nervous numbers (and wildly different) and, like Rhadoo’s recent release for the label, offer nothing to substantiate Luciano’s recent claim of digging house.

This is a confusing release (with Jorge González’s vocals) but one I can't stop playing it, although I must confess to not knowing quite what it's about. Luciano and Tobias are next up and should be just as perplexing - techno needs these mysteries.
