The second release on Marco Carola’s 2M imprint, is another stone cold exercise in floor control. Get Set, Simple Things and the digital bonus Oh Yeah are essentially high quality mixing tools with real crossover appeal - heavy on percussion, punctuated by short, punchy synth stabs and propelled forward by endlessly looping motifs. The infectious riffs that peppered his recent release on Plus 8 have been replaced by more compact, linear grooves and taut, sinuous arrangements giving this selection a slightly darker edge but Carola’s instinctive feel for the groove is still there in abundance as he skilfully manipulates these closeknit sonic structures.

“Techno” as a label connotes dry and repetitive, doing injustice to a genre that when done right, often manages to convey emotion within stripped-down, bleeped-out genre conventions. Case in point: John Tejada’s 11th artist album, Where, doesn’t lose sight of Tejada’s Detroit techno roots, but also represents a departure from the style’s strict conventions as a more layered, complex and moody offering than one would expect from, say, Derrick May or Kenny Larkin. “The album came out of experimentation and staring fresh without knowingly making a new album,” said Tejada.

LOS UPDATES / FIRST IF YOU PLEASE THE REMIX PART 01 (2008)

Someone needs to come up with a name for what the Chileans are doing with techno. It’s a sound that’s becoming increasingly pervasive, with producers as far as Romania revelling in extended percussive squirm – a match as bizarre as Finland’s obsession with tango. Currently the genre sits in a conceptual grey area between minimalist understatement, Latin swing and nineties glitch, but these comparisons fail to adequately explain the scope and intent behind these productions. These pieces by three Chilean producers on Cadenza are archetypal examples of Chilean techno (or whatever you want to call it): all are original, exciting, nervous numbers (and wildly different) and, like Rhadoo’s recent release for the label, offer nothing to substantiate Luciano’s recent claim of digging house.

This is a confusing release (with Jorge González’s vocals) but one I can't stop playing it, although I must confess to not knowing quite what it's about. Luciano and Tobias are next up and should be just as perplexing - techno needs these mysteries.

The recounting of Brazilectro began some eight years ago and, in any case since, this sterling series of compilations has had aficionados of Brazilian and Latin American oriented beats drooling, without any signs of losing its pepper. Since their jolly first issue, the Brazilectro samplers be dressed conquered the dance charts on a familiar basis, which has of obviously inspired any number of epigones, but not anyone of them are as convincing, and on numerous occasions the plagiarism has been all too prominent and the songs second group on those rather obtuse chill-out accompaniments.

After recording as Inanna and Archon Satani, Mikael Stavöstrand returns to the music scene with a most serious electronic work. De|gene|ra|ton spans 38 tracks (eight of which are entirely silent) which are meant to be considered together as a single long piece. The album marks an important step forward for Stavöstrand. While in the past he has delved into dark gothic rituals, this time around he takes a cue from artists like Ryoji Ikeda, Pan Sonic, and Merzbow in using elements of modern dance music and Japanese noise to focus purely on the tones. Listening to this music is a little like putting your brain through a meat grinder. De|gene|ra|ton can be disorienting, even crushing, so when it's over, you're slightly relieved. But after your ears stop ringing, you find yourself wanting more. Before you know it, you're a brain grinder addict.
