PROSUMER AND MURAT TAPELI - SERENITY (2008)

Ostgut is a rare breed among techno imprints - it consistently manages to turn out excellent albums. This much anticipated collaboration between Prosumer and Murat Tepeli has already been the subject of much critical attention and follows on from the excellent single "Turn Around" released a couple of weeks back.
Featuring the occasional vocal contribution from Elif Bicer and Prosumer himself, the album opens with the velveteen lounge stylings of "Serenity" - setting the pace and the mood for much of what follows. The album hits its best stride with the instrumental version of "Believe" - a brilliantly executed exercise in layered House reduction with an emotive Fender Rhodes underlay that works a treat.

"Latenight" is also brilliant - a beautifully spacious bassline cut that revolves around shimmering keys and nifty warehouse-style percussion that works a treat. "Devotion", meanwhile, is a slowed down House number that just oozes grace and sophistication, in the best possible sense.

Laurent Daumail, better known to music fans as DJ Cam, is one of the bedrock artists of the electronic genre, known not only for his remix work, but also for his eclectic productions of hip-hop, chill-out, and jazz. His hit remixes include everything from Nas (Made You Look) to Cypress Hill (Highlife) to Macy Gray (Do Something) to Michael Jackson (Rock My World). His first release, 1994s Underground Vibes was followed by Underground Live (1996), Substances (1996), DJ Kicks (1997), The Beat Assassinated (1998), The Loa Project Vol.1/Vol. 2 (2000), and Soulshine (2002). NuGroove Vol. 09 - E*Rock : : .

This episode features E*Rock, the musician and artist who co-founded the record label Audio Dregs with his brother nearly 10 years ago. In that time he has not only become one of experimental electronic music's most important figures but also generously contributed many, many songs to early soundtracks of Cool Hunting's videos. If you were watching back then and liked the melodic sounds you heard, Audio Dregs was probably responsible for them.

In this video, we visit him in his Portland home and studio, look at some of the album covers he designed, check out a zine he publishes, watch a few flash-based videos he directed and go on a bike ride. He also shares an unreleased track and weighs-in on headphone music, using digital tools and running a record label like an art collective.

V.A - TRIPLE R, SELECTION 06 (2008)

Riley Reinhold (Triple R) and his handful of labels, Trapez, Trapez Ltd, My Best Friend and Traum, seemed to spend most of 2007 on the ropes ready to go down. Beginning with last year’ Selection 5 mix, things weren’t looking so good, with a slew of indifferent, rather than overtly negative reviews raining in just when it seemed the crowd were at last baying for minimal. So despite pioneering and supporting the minimal sound over the years, Reinhold’s quorum of labels seemed to have arrived off the boat too early and were taking it on the chin more than most.

Selection 6 is minimal yes, but also with an occasional subtle neo-trance edge at times in both the mixing, to play off the pressure changes, and also at the core of many tracks. The result is a more driving and consciously psychedelic sound that is less rigid than straighter minimal, particularly in the opening half. Salvatore Freda & Massimo Stefanelli’s ‘Endless Ride’, one of the more neo-trance cuts, is one of the sets highlights, while the complicated arrangement of Mihalis Safras’ ‘R2’ has enough oomph to enough to lift itself to a dizzy peak. And just when you think a sterile glitch mood could take over, Reggy Von Oers’ ‘Metza’ slowly turns the mix all light headed and dazzling, while Safra’s unreleased mix of Alex Under’s ‘Trapezones Erectors’ is less trance, but certainly beefy, banging and playful.

Cool Hunting recently followed the Norwegian electronic musician Lindstrøm to Studio B in Brooklyn for his first ever live performance in the U.S. The producer and founder of FeedelityPrins Thomas, we witness the experimentation and creative process as they bounce ideas off each other. Back in New York, a chance encounter with a fellow European DJ on the street leads to a conversation about the glory days of Ibiza.

During an interview he enlightens us with the thought process behind his airy synth effects and strobe light percussion. records has been gaining much attention lately for his "space disco" style. Raised on country and western, Lindstrøm quit his band and job to devote all his time to producing this danceable music. In his studio, where he oftentimes collaborates with fellow Norwegian Prins Thomas, we witness the experimentation and creative process as they bounce ideas off each other. From the outset it is easy to spot the influences, mainly detroit house music, 70's soul, disco, jazz and funk. So what you get here is a double album of late night soul edged dance music deftly created from snippets and sections of long forgotten gems which are twisted and turned into modern day masterpieces for the sweaty dancefloor on a Saturday night. Second episode of Nugroove, Electronic Culture.
Known for deftly blending a wide range of multi-ethnic sounds, calling Brighton-based DJ Quantic a consummate crate-digger is almost an understatement. With that in mind and with the impending North American release of the 26 year-old's fourth solo album, An Announcement to Answer, we tagged along with Quantic on a recent visit to a Brooklyn record store.

There and in an interview, he shared some tips and gave us a little insight into his current collecting habits, which naturally show up on An Announcement. The disc—a laid-back journey through jazz, funk, hip hop, and soul—are what you'd expect from a musician who's traveled throughout Africa and Puerto Rico, creating and recording much of his album on the road. From playful beats laced with trumpet samples and warm guitar loops to guest appearances by labelmate Ohmega Watts and LA-based chanteuse Noelle Scaggs, the eclectic lineup is well-balanced, never boring, and plenty lively.

On Friday 24 March 2006, during the Winter Music Conference week in Miami, Arnold and Ellis performed an eclectic set of sounds that touched nearly every style and taste—in one improvised set they manifested a sonic tour through jazz, soul and funk to latin, rock, techno, electro, breaks and hip hop.

The show took place as part of CO-OP MIAMI, an event organized by Goya Music and Amalgama at The District in Miami's Design District.

M.A.N.D.Y. - FABRIC 38

As owners of the hip Berlin house label Get Physical, M.A.N.D.Y have mined an aesthetic where sonic experiments meet lifestyle gloss.
Their contribution to the Fabric series opens with Yello's Bananas to the Beat, the kind of brilliant cheesy-listening move now expected of them, and proceeds along cocktail-smooth lines. From the delicate music box melody of Lucio Aquilina's My Cube to the cut-up, blissful vocals of DJ Yellow & Astrid Suryanto's To the Top, there's an irrepressible cuteness to their selections.

Fabric 38 is perhaps played a little straighter than, for example, their landmark 2006 At the Controls mix, and there are a few too many longueurs, but the closing stages - the ascending synths of Basic Soul Unit's Tunnels, the last dance disco melancholy of Lopazz's 2 Fast 4 U - are pure bliss.

A disc "subtle" and in posession of a "really nice flow" between its tracks, which should, says M.A.N.D.Y., "make you move your butt." That remains to be seen until the disc emerges in the UK and the rest of the world January 14, though it won't hit the U.S. until February 12.

SLEEP WALKER - WORKS

More than just "works" from Sleep Walker -a collection of singles, remixes, and new tracks- all representing some of the best work from this ultra-hip club jazz combo.

As with their full albums, the style here is jazz based at the outset (played in a classic mode that has plenty of echoes of Impulse Records during the Coltrane generation) but forged into a tighter, leaner groove for the 21st Century, a mode that's sometimes rhythmic and aimed at the dancefloor, yet which never loses any sense of depth or creativity from a jazz perspective!

Saxophonist Masato Nakamura contributes some incredibly great tenor and soprano work to the tunes, and Hajimi Yoshizawa's modal piano lines pulsate tremendously throughout. A few cuts are remixes, but still very much embody the Sleep Walker sound, with new instrumentation, as the group makes a live jazz take on the tracks they're supposedly remixing!
